Herpes viruses cannot be the cause of ME/cfs
The role of herpes viruses as causative agents of ME/cfs has been investigated over many years and rejected.
It is true that there is a correlation between activated herpes viruses and ME, but correlation is not causation.
Herpes virus infections cannot account for the symptom profile and objective abnormalities reported in people suffering from ME/cfs.
The relationship between herpes viruses and retroviral infection is outlined below.
Contracting mono would cause a latent human gammaretrovirus like XMRV, or other members of the same family, to reactivate and replicate, leading to pathology which is very similar to the pathology seen in HIV infections (HIV does not only cause AIDS!!), namely neuroendocrine and mitochondrial dysfunction.
On the other hand, a human gammaretrovirus infection causes the increase of certain enzymes, which cause latent Epstein Barr virus (EBV) to reactivate.
Assuming that an active herpes virus infection in people with ME causes ME, is a simple mistake for people without an adequate science background to make. It is however just an assumption and not fact.
For those interested in pursuing the science, the links are below.
Basically the message is that they upregulate certain enzymes called protein kinases.

Which among other things can reactivate latent Epstein Barr viruses.

This is how Epstein Barr virus reactivates latent retroviruses.
